Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common skin condition characterized by small bumps that can appear red, pink, or darker in color, often found on the backs of arms but potentially affecting other areas like legs, trunk, and even the face in rare cases. While KP isn't harmful, its appearance can be bothersome, prompting many to seek effective treatment.
However, the intuitive approach of aggressively scrubbing or using hot water and excessive detergents can actually exacerbate KP. This misguided strategy temporarily smooths the skin but worsens the condition in the long run. KP is essentially dry, bumpy skin—aggressive methods only irritate the skin further, leading to recurrence of the bumps.
So, what's the right approach? First and foremost, do no harm—avoid hot water and detergents on affected areas. These products strip moisture and worsen dryness. Similarly, steer clear of physical abrasives like loofahs and scrubs, which can inflame the skin.
Instead, opt for moisturizers that contain humectant agents like ammonium lactate or urea. These ingredients help hydrate the skin, reducing the appearance of KP bumps over time. Apply these moisturizers twice daily, enhancing their effectiveness by sealing in moisture with occlusive products like white petroleum jelly or our shea butter balms.
Consistency is key with KP treatment since it's a chronic condition. Even as symptoms improve, maintaining the skincare routine is crucial to prevent KP from flaring up again.
