For those suffering from sensitive and dry skin, application of a moisturizer could mean the difference between healthy skin and sensitive irritated skin.
The most effective moisturizers belong to a category called "occlusives." The name implies that these compounds seal or occlude the skin, decreasing water loss through the epidermis. Unfortunately, occlusive moisturizers are usually greasy and thick. This turns many people off.
Overuse of moisturizer is common. It's rarely discussed that the amount of effective moisturizer needed to make a difference is tiny, amounting to a thin layer on the skin that restores a semblance of the skin barrier. There is no need for large amounts of moisturizer. In fact, using more moisturizer than needed contributes little. A thicker than needed layer of moisturizer can look too shiny and unnatural, can lead to an unpleasant "too greasy" sensation, stain fabric, and result in wasted product.
While moisturizing ingredient categories such as humectants and emollients can be helpful, occlusive ingredients are crucial for first line protection of the skin barrier.
The trick using greasy moisturizers such as petroleum jelly or Butter Oasis Moisturizing Balm is to use a drop-sized amount over a large area: the face/neck, the forearm, the shin, etc. Massage the product onto your skin until there's no residue left. Contrary to common belief, one does not need any more than a microscopic layer to protect the skin. This way you'll moisturize your dry skin without leaving a greasy residue that'll stain your clothes and sheets. Properly applied - a moisturizer should be almost invisible with a subtle sheen restored to the the previously dry or ashy area.
