Have you ever felt frustrated when you weren’t heard or understood, perhaps resorting to extreme measures to get your point across? This concept is not so different from how we often treat our skin. Our skin communicates with us in its own language, which I like to call Skinese. Unfortunately, many of us, including skincare professionals, overlook or misunderstand these signals, believing we know better.
Just as with any language, understanding Skinese requires effort and attentiveness. Our skin sends us signals—like dryness, redness, or breakouts—that reveal its needs. These symptoms often indicate a lack of moisture, irritation, or a reaction to certain products. Rather than dismissing these signs or reacting with harsher cleaning routines, which can exacerbate the issue, the key is to listen and respond appropriately.
Common responses such as scrubbing more intensely or using hot water can worsen the problem. Instead, the message from your skin is usually to pause, reassess, and seek help if needed. Understanding and responding to these signals isn’t always straightforward; it challenges our preconceived notions about skincare and requires a willingness to experiment and adapt. Sometimes, professional guidance is necessary to navigate these signals effectively.
Effective communication with your skin involves patience and persistence. By learning to understand and respect Skinese you can build a better relationship with your skin, promoting its health and well-being. Remember, your skin knows its needs better than anyone. Acknowledging and addressing these needs ensures your skin receives the care it truly deserves.
