Skin health and great sex go hand in hand — and it's not about your face
Before we begin: If you're experiencing significant or persistent sexual dysfunction, see your physician — this guide complements professional medical care, it does not replace it. Always practice safe sex. New partner? Have the conversation about health status. Use a condom when appropriate. And take care of your general health — eat right, work out, stay fit. Great skin goes hand in hand with great health, not instead of it.
Many skincare ads sell through sex — but the focus is almost always the face. The face has very little to do with great sex. The rest of your body, and particularly the genitals, matter at least as much if not more. Sex-ready skin has an intact barrier, is free of irritation, and is unlikely to get irritated with pressure or friction — both of which are inseparable parts of sexual intercourse. Here's exactly how to get there.
The Sex-Ready Skin Protocol
Protect the Skin Barrier — Minimize Cleansing
Keep your skin barrier intact by minimizing soaping and eliminating all scrubbing and exfoliating. For body odor — soap goes under the armpits, in the groin folds, and in the buttock crease. Do not use soap anywhere else. Your skin does not smell from head to toe — only under the stinky bits, and even those are widely overblown.
Break the habit of cleansing the penis regularly. Soap has no place on the penis on a routine basis — and scrubbing has no place there ever. If soap is used after intercourse with a partner whose health you're uncertain about, use regular soap and lukewarm water right after — restricted to the outer area. That's it.
Moisturize Where Needed
With less cleansing, your need to moisturize will decrease dramatically — but play it by ear. Dry lips, dry skin on the arms, legs, hands, or penis — moisturize with an oil-based product like Butter Oasis or Butter Blossom as needed. Never scrub the lips. Let the skin tell you what it needs — and respond accordingly.
Address Any Active Skin Conditions
With barrier preservation and appropriate moisturization, your skin will be far less likely to get irritated. But if you're dealing with eczema, pimples, or any other skin condition — see your dermatologist for specific advice and prescriptions. Don't let anything slide. Put your best skin forward.
Hair Removal — Keep It Minimal and Gentle
Shaving and hair removal are abrasive by default. Minimize hair removal to the bare necessities while being mindful of what's presentable. Take care of facial hair, ear hair, eyebrows, and nose hair — either on your own or professionally. Trim rather than shave wherever possible.
For pubic hair — pubic hair provides cushioning and likely helps reduce the risk of certain infections, including warts. Not recommended to remove it. If you must, use the least abrasive method available: laser hair removal, waxing, or shaving with generous shaving gel and a sharp razor. Always follow with Butter Oasis or Butter Blossom immediately after to allow the skin to recover.
