Stop Buying Into Skincare Lies

You already know you're being lied to. Here's exactly how — and what to do instead

Skincare promotional language is full to the brim with promises of healthier, glowier, shinier, plumper, more radiant, younger-looking skin. You'd think you died and went to Photoshop filter heaven. Here's the thing — you already know you're being lied to. You just haven't wanted to admit it. If you could have skincared your way into skin perfection, it would have happened already. What's actually happening is an ongoing hamster wheel that keeps you treading water, literally.

How They Keep You in the Loop

1. Language — Appeal to Authority and Fake Science

Skincare language appeals to your emotions through authority — the doctor, celebrity, or model endorsing the product. They must know something you don't. So you fall for it a little, buy the product, and keep applying it because those people couldn't possibly steer you wrong. Right? 99.9% of appeal to authority in skincare advertising is exactly what it looks like — abuse of authority to promote a half-truth or a flat-out lie.

When your favorite skincare company lists "science," "research," and "statistics" to back their product — check it out. You will be disappointed. The overwhelming majority of skincare studies are woefully underpowered: poor study design, abysmal numbers of test subjects, and subjective metrics like user satisfaction that are easy to manipulate and present as proof of something they are not.

2. Imagery — Photoshop Filter Heaven

Airbrushing is the original filter and it has always existed. It is a surefire way of ensnaring prospects and getting them to believe the validity of product claims — then buy in and start using. When the product inevitably fails to deliver what the image promised, the consumer typically assumes they need to try harder or try something different — not that the image was simply a lie.

3. Positive Sensory Experience — The Full Package

The beautiful tasteful packaging. The words on the label enticing you further. The fragrance. The color. The texture on your fingers. The way it feels going on. The way your skin looks immediately after application. This is immediate neurosensory payoff — immensely powerful cues that deepen devotion to the product through pure sensory experience, independent of any actual result. The experience is the product.

4. Negative Sensory Experience Rebranded — The Pepsodent Effect

And for those not fully caught by the positive experience, there is something for the no-pain-no-gain crowd. The Pepsodent Effect is the paradigm where you punish your skin and convince yourself the unpleasant sensation is a purge — a tradeoff on the way to skin perfection. Scrubs and exfoliants are the classic tools: physically abrading the skin under the promise of removing "undesired" elements like "dead skin cells." For many users the irritation is tolerated, and the skin compensates for the nonsense. For an increasing number, scrubbing and exfoliation is simply too much to bear — and their skin eventually falls apart.

The Truth — In Plain Language

No skincare product can make you younger. No skincare product can ever improve your skin beyond what your skin is naturally capable of. All cleansers are abrasives with no proven benefit. Most moisturizers are water that evaporates and leaves behind inactive ingredients. The sensory experience — positive or negative — is the loop that keeps you coming back. Not the result.

🩺 The Bottom Line

Language, imagery, positive sensory experience, and the Pepsodent Effect. These are the four mechanisms keeping you on the skincare hamster wheel. You already suspected it. Now you know it. The next step is to act on it — stop the cleansing, simplify the moisturizer, and let your skin do what it was built to do.
