The Penis Skincare Industry Is Lying to You
A dermatologist breaks down every product category men use on their genitals — and why almost all of it is unnecessary or harmful
If you've been living in Western society for the past few decades, chances are you do something extra to address penile hygiene. You may not be dramatic about it — but over 95% of men use some form of cleansing product on the area, and many add a scrub, exfoliant, or moisturizing cream. The more involved go further — brightening creams, manscaping products, fragrance. Here is a full breakdown of every category: what the industry says it does, and what it actually does.
Product by Product: The Truth
Intimate Washes
Marketed specifically for genital hygiene, these are detergent-based products — soaps in specialty packaging. The penile skin and glans do not require soap or any cleansing product. Routine use strips the natural microbiome, disrupts the skin barrier, and causes the dryness and irritation they claim to address. Lukewarm water only. That is the full cleansing protocol.
Scrubs and Exfoliants
Physical abrasion on penile skin and mucosal tissue causes micro-injuries, disrupts the protective barrier, and opens the door to infection. There is no clinical scenario in which exfoliating the penis is appropriate. Never scrub or exfoliate this area. Not before anything, not after anything, not for any reason.
Deodorants
Deodorants contain alcohol, fragrance, and various active compounds designed for underarm skin — which is structurally and functionally different from genital skin. Applying deodorant to the genital area is an almost guaranteed route to chemical irritation. The penis does not produce odor requiring a deodorant. If persistent unusual odor is present, it warrants medical evaluation — not masking.
Manscaping Products
Hair removal in the genital area removes natural cushioning and increases the risk of bacterial and viral infection — including genital warts. If hair removal is chosen for personal reasons, use the least abrasive method: laser hair removal, or shaving with a sharp razor and generous shaving foam. Always follow with a small amount of oil-based occlusive immediately after. Never use chemical depilatory creams on this area.
Brightening Creams
Pigmentation differences in genital skin are entirely normal anatomy — the result of normal melanocyte activity in hormonally influenced skin. Brightening creams for the genitals contain bleaching agents, often hydroquinone or kojic acid, which can cause significant irritation on sensitive mucosal skin. This is a cosmetic intervention with real risk and no medical justification.
Fragrance
Applying fragrance, cologne, or scented products directly to genital skin is a reliable route to contact dermatitis in one of the most sensitive areas of the body. Fragrance compounds are among the most common causes of allergic and irritant contact reactions. There is no benefit — only risk.
Essential Oils
Essential oils — tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus, and others — are among the most common causes of contact dermatitis in skincare generally. On genital skin, their potential for irritation is significantly amplified. Products marketed as "natural" or "organic" alternatives for penile care frequently contain essential oils. Natural does not mean safe. Essential oils have no place on penile skin.

The Actual Routine — In Full
- Rinse with lukewarm water. No soap. No intimate wash. No cleansing product of any kind on the head, shaft, or inside the foreskin.
- Never scrub or exfoliate. Not before anything, not after anything. Never.
- No fragrance. No essential oils. No brightening creams. No deodorant.
- If the skin is dry — first stop whatever is causing the dryness. Then moisturize sparingly with Butter Oasis or Butter Blossom. A tiny amount goes a very long way.
- Hair removal is optional. If you proceed, use the least abrasive method and follow with a small amount of occlusive immediately after.
🩺 The Bottom Line
The penis skincare industry exists because penile skin is accessible, sensitive enough to react to things, and easy to convince men needs intervention. It doesn't. Lukewarm water, no soap, no scrubbing, and a tiny amount of oil-based balm if dry. That's the whole routine. Everything else is the matrix taking your money.
