Essential Male Genital Care: What to Do and What to Avoid

Let’s dive into male genital care – or skincare of the penis, scrotum and groin area. We’ll focus on how to properly maintain the area, what to steer clear of, and when to consult a dermatologist. The genital area, including the penis and scrotum, undergoes a lot of friction and activity—between wearing underwear, urination, and sexual activity—making it highly susceptible to irritation. Here’s how to keep things in check.

    What to Avoid

    1. Hot Water and Strong Streams:

Avoid hot showers above 104°F (40°C) and strong water streams. These can physically and thermally irritate the sensitive skin of the genital area. Stick to lukewarm water to prevent unnecessary irritation.

    2. Harsh Soaps and Cleansers:

Most of the genital area doesn’t need intense cleaning. In fact, using harsh soaps and strong cleansers can do more harm than good. The groin folds might need gentle soaping due to body odor, but otherwise, a simple wash with lukewarm water is sufficient. If you must use soap, opt for gentle, dye-free options like Vanicream Cleansing Bar or soap or Dr. Bronner's - Pure-Castile Liquid Soap.*

    3. Abrasives:

Steer clear of physical abrasives such as sponges, scrubs, loofahs, and washcloths. These can damage the skin and increase sensitivity. When drying off after a shower, use a pat-dry approach instead of rubbing to minimize irritation.

    4. Disinfectants and Antiseptics:

Avoid using disinfecting wipes, alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide on the genital area. These products can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier and exacerbate irritation. Similarly, over-the-counter antibacterial or antifungal creams should be used only if prescribed by a healthcare provider.

    5. Aggressive Cleaning for Uncircumcised Men:

If you’re uncircumcised, be gentle with cleaning underneath the foreskin. It’s designed to stay moisturized naturally, so aggressive cleaning can lead to sensitivity and irritation. If you notice bad odor or excessive secretion, consult a dermatologist to ensure there’s no infection or severe irritation.

    What You Can Do

    1. Gentle Washing:

Use lukewarm water for washing the area. It’s often enough to eliminate body odor without causing irritation. If you need a bit more cleaning power, use a mild, fragrance-free soap like Vanicream body wash or bar soap, but apply it conservatively.

    2. Moisturization:

For dry or irritated skin, apply a small amount of thick moisturizer, such as white petroleum jelly or our moisturizing shea butter balms. These occlusive moisturizers help lock in moisture. Apply sparingly to avoid further irritation.

    3. Cornstarch for Sweat:

If sweating is an issue, cornstarch can help absorb excess moisture. If sweatiness or irritation persists, it’s best to consult a dermatologist.

    Hair Removal: Pros and Cons

Hair removal is increasingly common among men, driven by various reasons including aesthetics and partner preferences. However, hair serves important functions like cushioning and protection against infections. If you choose to remove hair, use a sharp razor and shaving gel to minimize friction and irritation. For a longer-lasting solution, consider professional options like laser hair removal, but always consult with a qualified provider.

Avoid Baby Wipes or Wet Wipes: These often contain irritating ingredients and should not be used on the genital area. They can cause significant irritation and are generally a waste of time and money.

    Conclusion

Proper care for the genital area involves avoiding irritants, using gentle cleaning methods, and addressing issues with appropriate treatments. If you follow these guidelines and still face problems, consulting a dermatologist is a good next step. If you found this information helpful, please like and subscribe for more content.
