Why Isn’t Your Eczema Improving? Six Key Reasons

    Eczema or Dermatitis.
If you’re struggling with hand eczema and not seeing the improvement you hoped for, you’re not alone. This common condition—characterized by itchy, red, and flaky skin can be incredibly frustrating, especially when treatments seem ineffective. Before we dive into today’s topic, I want to thank everyone who has supported my bestselling book Sick Skin - Skin Care Made Simple. Pick up your copy now! Now, let’s get into why your hand eczema might not be getting better.

    1. Continued Exposure to Triggers
The most significant reason for persistent hand eczema is ongoing exposure to the irritants or allergens causing the problem. Whether it’s an allergy or an irritant contact dermatitis, constant contact with the offending substance will keep the eczema from healing. This issue can persist despite diligent use of medications and moisturizers. Identifying and avoiding these triggers is crucial for effective treatment.

    2. Persistent Harmful Habits
If you’re still washing your hands excessively or using irritating products, your eczema may worsen. Hot water, harsh soaps, and frequent hand sanitizers can aggravate your condition. Even if hand hygiene is important, do it mindfully. Use lukewarm water, gentle, dye-free soap, avoid unnecessary hand washing and cleansing of other body parts.

    3. Using the Wrong Moisturizer
Not all moisturizers are created equal. Many people mistakenly believe that any moisturizer will do. However, effective hand eczema treatment requires specific types of moisturizers. Greasy options like white petroleum jelly or our vegan balms are excellent options. Apply a drop-sized amount directly to the affected areas to maximize benefits and minimize staining. Avoid switching between different products, as consistency is key.

    4. Incorrect Medication Use
The effectiveness of topical medications can be compromised if they’re either too weak or not applied correctly. Ensure that you’re using the right strength of medication and applying it as directed—typically twice a day. Inadequate application can undermine the treatment’s effectiveness, preventing proper healing.

    5. Adding Unnecessary Products
Some individuals add extra treatments, like antibiotic ointments or essential oils, to their regimen. While these may seem harmless, they can cause further irritation or allergic reactions. Stick to the prescribed treatment plan and avoid adding extras that can complicate or hinder your recovery.

    6. Possible Allergies to Ingredients
A less obvious issue might be an allergy to components in your medication, such as steroids or propylene glycol. If your eczema seems to improve and then flare up again, it could be a sign of an allergic reaction to one of these ingredients. Consult your dermatologist to investigate this possibility and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

    Conclusion
By addressing these common issues, you can improve your approach to managing hand eczema. If you’re still having trouble, consider discussing these factors with your dermatologist.
